Block Paving Driveways in St Helens

Block Paving Driveways in St Helens

St Helens grew up around glassmaking and coal, and that industrial past is the thing to keep in mind before laying anything heavy on the ground. Block paving is a popular choice across the town, from Victorian terraces near the centre to newer housing on the outskirts, and it earns that popularity because it tolerates a little movement better than a rigid slab. If ground settles, blocks can be lifted and relaid. That flexibility is useful on streets near former colliery land, where conditions are not always uniform. The look is adaptable too, with colours and patterns that suit anything from a narrow terrace frontage to a wide modern drive. Block paving in St Helens only performs if the sub-base is built properly for the ground it sits on, so that is where the effort goes.

Planning block paving driveways in St Helens

We check the ground on site in St Helens rather than assuming, particularly on older streets near former colliery land where conditions can vary from one property to the next. A deeper or more carefully compacted sub-base may be called for where the soil is soft or made-up. On terrace frontages, space is tight, so edge restraints and neat cuts matter. Under the general rule, a new or replacement hard surface over 5 square metres at the front of a house needs planning permission unless it is permeable or drains to a permeable area. Check with St Helens Council.
